Fall & Winter Skincare Guide- How to Prevent and Soothe Dry Skin

As the crisp air rolls in and leaves begin to fall, your skin might be the first to feel the seasonal shift. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity can quickly lead to dryness, irritation, and flakiness. With a few simple adjustments, your skincare routine can help your skin stay soft, nourished, and resilient all season long.

Adjust Your Routine for the Season
Fall and winter are the ideal times to reassess your skincare habits. The products that worked in the summer may no longer provide enough hydration and protection in colder months.

1. Cleanse Gently
If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, it’s time to switch to a more moisturizing cleanser. For the face, opt for cream or lotion-based cleansers that don’t foam—these are less likely to strip the skin’s natural oils. Oil cleansers are another great option, helping to remove impurities while leaving behind hydration.

For the body, use emollient-rich body washes with nourishing ingredients like plant butters, botanical oils, and lipids. Avoid harsh sulfates and choose sulfate-free formulations that are gentler on the skin barrier.

2. Upgrade Your Moisturizer
As temperatures drop, your skin needs deeper hydration. Replace light lotions and serums with thicker creams and body butters. Look for formulas that contain:

  • Shea butter or cocoa butter

  • Olive, avocado, or jojoba oil

  • Hyaluronic acid (best applied to damp skin for optimal moisture retention)

These occlusive emollients help lock in moisture and prevent water loss. And don’t forget your lips and nails—apply balm or cuticle cream regularly to prevent cracking and flaking.

3. Reassess Your Active Ingredients
Reduce your use of retinol and exfoliants, especially if your skin becomes more sensitive in dry weather. These actives can be harsh when your skin barrier is compromised. Instead, use them sparingly and follow up with a rich moisturizer.

4. Continue Using SPF
Yes, sunscreen is still essential—even in the colder months. UV rays remain active year-round, and snow or high altitudes can increase exposure. A broad-spectrum SPF should stay in your daily routine.

5. Add Humidity to the Air
Indoor heating can make already dry winter air even worse. Using a humidifier at home adds moisture to your environment, helping your skin stay supple and hydrated. Avoid sitting too close to direct heat sources, like radiators or fireplaces, which can further dehydrate your skin.

Start Early, Stay Consistent
Begin adjusting your skincare routine early in the season to stay ahead of dryness. If your skin becomes severely dry or irritated, it may signal a damaged skin barrier—which can take several months to fully repair. Be patient and stay consistent with your routine.
